Step into the world of our black swans and unlock the wonders of these extraordinary creatures
The black swan has a red bill with a white band, red eyes, and dark grey legs. Both male and female black swans share a similar appearance, although female swans are notably smaller than their male counterparts. Cygnets are distinguishable by their grey feathers and black bills, while newly-fledged young swans exhibit dull greyish-brown plumage with brown eyes.
Their vocalisations are often referred to as "musical bugling", primarily used as a contact call between mates, often accompanied by characteristic head movements. Black swans produce hissing sounds when protecting their young or feeling threatened.
